No heat right now

Check these six things first

Run through this before you call anyone. It takes a minute, and it fixes the problem often enough to be worth doing every time.

Is the oil burner switch on? It looks like a light switch, usually at the top of the basement stairs or beside the burner. It gets flipped off by accident constantly.
Is the thermostat set above room temperature? Push it up several degrees and listen for the burner.
Is there actually oil in the tank? Do not trust the gauge on its own. Stick the tank, or bobble the gauge to see if the float is stuck.
Press the reset button on the relay. Once only. Pressing it repeatedly floods the chamber with unburned oil and turns a small problem into a large one.
Watch for the flame. If the burner runs but there is no flame, stop there and call us.
If the burner does not run at all, check for a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker.

Four things that cut what you burn

None of these are exotic and all of them are measurable.

Up to 5%

A heating system tune up. A system running at peak efficiency burns less to make the same heat. This is the cheapest of the four.

Up to 10%

A programmable thermostat. Turning the thermostat back no more than 6 degrees for 8 hours a day is worth about 10% a year on the heating bill.

Up to 15%

A modern oil burner. Replacing an old burner can cut costs by around 15%, and rebates are often available.

14% to 25%

Water heating. That is the share of household energy it accounts for. Matching the water heater to the house is usually the fix.
